Ayurveda , the science of life, prevention and longevity is the oldest and most holistic medical system available on the planet today. It was placed in written form over 5,000 years ago in India, it was said to be a world medicine dealing with both body and the spirit. Before the advent of writing, the ancient wisdom of this healing system was a part of the spiritual tradition of the Sanatana Dharma (Universal Religion), or Vedic Religion. VedaVyasa, the famous sage, shaktavesha avatar of Vishnu, put into writing the complete knowledge of Ayurveda, along with the more directly spiritual insights of self realization into a body of scriptural literature called the Vedas and the Vedic literatures.
One starts by knowing their Dosha, or Ayurveda mind & body type.
Skin care products are formulated based on the Dosha. Ayurveda lists Oils that can be beneficial to a particular Dosha - Enhancing Health, Vigor & Vitality.
Kapha is the dosha or constitution as it may be known, responsible for lubrication and structure of the body. The elements that govern Kapha are earth and water. Kapha people are very sturdy, grounding and they are difficult to move. They are comfortable and happy in one place and don't like change. They tend to be the healthiest of the three doshas, physically and mentally. Kapha is our lubrication in the brain, around the joints, reproductive fluids and is responsible for building and surrounding most of our tissues. It keeps our bodies from turning into raisins. Kaphas are prone to static & heavy conditions like; obesity, lethargy, dullness of mind, and diabetes.
Pitta means, "that which digests things." The elements that govern Pitta are fire and water. Think of Pitta as the body's fire or metabolism. Pitta people tend to be of medium proportion, with a structure that is neither small nor heavy. Their physical marker is a strong or athletic body. Skin is oily, soft, pale and warm. Their hair is predisposed towards premature graying or thinning. They have sharp teeth and sharp facial features with a pointed nose and penetrating eyes. They have a good appetite, strong digestive fire and their body temperature is higher than normal.
Vata is considered the leader of the three dosha's. Vata governs all movement in the mind and body. It controls blood flow, elimination of wastes, breathing and the movement of thoughts across the mind. People of Vata constitution are generally physically underdeveloped. Their chests are flat and their veins and muscle tendons are visible. The complexion is brown; the skin is cold, rough, dry and cracked. Vata people generally are either too tall or too short, with thin frames which reveal prominent joints and bone-ends because of poor muscle development. The hair is curly and scanty, the eyelashes are thin and the eyes lusterless. The eyes may be sunken, small, dry, and active. The nails are rough and brittle. The shape of the nose is bent and turned-up.
