Overview:
Angina is a type of chest pain or discomfort caused by reduced blood flow to the heart muscle.
Signs and Symptoms:
Angina is typically described as squeezing, pressure, heaviness, tightness or pain in your chest. Nausea, fatigue, shortness of breath, anxiety, sweating or dizziness are other symptoms that may accompany angina. This pressure can extend to the arm, especially the left arm, neck, jaw, shoulder or back.
Causes and Organs Affected:
Angina is caused by reduced blood flow to the heart muscle. The most common cause of reduced blood flow to your heart muscle is coronary artery disease (CAD). Your heart (coronary) arteries can become narrowed by fatty deposits called plaques. This is called atherosclerosis.
Risk Factor:
The following risk factors increase the risk of coronary artery disease and angina: High blood cholesterol or triglyceride levels, High blood pressure, Sedentary lifestyle, Stress, Alcohol, Tobacco, Obesity & Diabetes.
Treatment:
Angina can be treated in varous ways & combinations: - lifestyle changes, medications, angioplasty and stenting, or coronary bypass surgery.
