Overview:
Vaginitis is an inflammation of the vagina that can result in discharge, itching and pain. The cause is usually a change in the normal balance of vaginal bacteria or an infection but can also result from reduced estrogen levels after menopause. Types are: Bacterial vaginosis, Yeast infections, Trichomoniasis & Atrophic vaginitis
Signs and Symptoms:
Change in color, odour of discharge, vaginal itching or irritation, Painful urination
May have Light vaginal bleeding.
Symptoms may vary depending on the type of infection.
Causes and Organs Affected:
Overgrowth of anaerobic bacteria results in bacterial vaginosis. Yeast infections are caused by the overgrowth of a fungus C. albicans. Trichomoniasis is a common sexually transmitted disease caused by a microscopic, one-celled parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis. This organism spreads during sexual intercourse with someone who already has the infection.
Risk Factor:
Infections can be caused by Medications, such as antibiotics and steroids, Uncontrolled diabetes, Hormonal changes, such as those associated with pregnancy, birth control pills or menopause
Treatment:
Metronidazole (Flagyl, MetroGel) or clindamycin (Cleocin) as tablets or vaginal gels or creams.
