Overview:
Whooping cough (pertussis) — is a contagious respiratory tract infection. Signs are a severe cough followed by a high pitched intake of breath that sounds like a whoop.
Signs and Symptoms:
A bacterial infection starts with the symptoms of a common cold running nose, watery eyes, sneezing, fever and later evolves into a stage of cough with phlegm, continous coughing attacks, aches & pain - tiredness due ti coughing.
Causes and Organs Affected:
Causes - Bordetella pertussis bacterium, which is transmitted through someone who's already infected.
Organs affected - Respiratory Track, Trachea, Bronchi, Lungs
Risk Factor:
Highly Contagious. Effects Children & Infants
Treatment:
Treatment with antibiotics such as azithromycin or erythromycin. Over-the-counter cough medicines have little effect on whooping cough. A case of whooping cough usually resolves in six weeks but may last longer.
