Phytotherapy

Description:

Phytotherapy is a form of medical treatment which relies on the use of plants, either whole or in the form of prepared extracts and essences.

The practice focuses on the person rather than the disease or ailment itself and so can help almost any condition. The actual treatment is tailored to the individual and specific to them and their health. Phytotherapy or herbal medicine are a type of medicine that uses plants and plant extracts, in several forms. They are used to treat illnesses and diseases and to promote good health. They are obtained from organic and natural resources such as plant leaves, bark, berries, flowers and roots.

Phytotherapy has been around for centuries before becoming the precursor of conventional medicine. Today the popularity of herbal remedies has reached also the western world with the increase of holistic approach to many conditions to the level that herbs are widely available over the counter.

By using phytotherapy many feel that they have more control over their treatment, experience fewer side effects than the conventional medicine or simply prefer an holistic approach aiming to treat the cause of the symptoms rather than the symptoms alone.

Phytotherapy may be used to treat acute or short-lived medical conditions, chronic or established health problems. The holistic approach to illness views the physical, mental and emotional aspects of life as closely interconnected and equally important approaches to the treatment. This is the ethos of The Holistic Practice.

Phytotherapy can be administered in different forms:

-fresh herbs (such as, garlic cloves or peppermint leaves)
-capsules or tablets (powdered herbs)
-extracts (a concentrated form that comes as liquid tinctures, solid pills or capsule)
-tea
-in foods
-as essential oils (for external use)
-as creams and ointments (for applying to the skin).

Tinctures are absorbed straight in the bloodstream and solid extracts (pills or capsules) are first digested within the stomach and intestine before their active components can be released. Many herbs are readily available and are user-friendly with simple and clear instructions. However, if you are self-prescribing but unsure of what to buy, you may contact The Holistic Practice for advice.Be aware that few herbal remedies may produce side effects. If you feel that an herb does not suit you, stop taking it and seek advice.
