Life and motion are inseparable. For a living body to function optimally, all layers of tissue from top to bottom, inside to out should be moving freely and fully. Optimal mobility permits and encourages optimal function.
Visceral Manipulation (VM) & Craniosacral Therapy (CST) both address connective tissue restrictions in deeper layers of the body which affect movement & function. They restore normal movement to tissues beyond the musculoskeletal system and, as such, are often the ‘missing piece’ in manual therapy. They work with the fluid & elastic nature of tissues. VM & CST are both gentle & specific.
VM restores normal movement to the internal organs. It is, essentially, 'Organ Specific Fascial Mobilisation'.
Connective Tissue (CT) is continuous throughout the whole body, connecting all of its parts & layers together. It is “Visco-Elastic” - made up of Fluid, Elastic & Collagen. It forms Tendons, Ligaments & Fascia, and also the lining for each of the body’s cavities.
The body’s physical interconnectedness through all layers, and its visco-elasticity, mean that a reduction in movement in one area will change movement in another. Virtually all musculo-skeletal problems will have a visceral +/- cranial component. If not addressed, the musculo-skeletal problems are more likely to persist.
Assessment of the body’s tissues is 3- dimensional & allows me to determine the best place to start. Treatment may or may not begin at the site of symptom(s). Instead, it will target the area of the body that is causing or perpetuating the problem. eg reduced rib cage movement might be due to the Liver & Stomach not gliding freely against each other and the diaphragm, and may also be related to reflux. Reduced hip movement might be related to the Bladder not gliding freely against the pubic bone, & may also be related to bladder control problems more...
